The Lake Ontario Natural Resource Center

If SUNY Brockport gets its way, the old ferry terminal will be retrofitted into a research center that includes a small aquarium. In my opinion, this would be a great way to utilize the Port of Rochester. Given the trend with fuel prices, I don't see a ferry being viable anytime in the foreseeable future without a significant public subsidy. So instead of waiting for an unlikely silver bullet to come along, I'd rather see this nice facility utilized.

Beyond the most obvious benefit of this center, which is of course that it will determine ways to protect the environment and improve water quality, there are other significant benefits to the region. Charlotte is typically a very seasonal community. Businesses tend to struggle outside of the spring and summer. This center would get steady use throughout the year which could provide businesses with a nice shot in the arm during the winter, while it also gets Brockport students into the Rochester community. Additionally, after the ferry's failure, people are obviously risk averse, and this project has virtually no risk. Finally, the aquarium will serve as an attraction for residents and visitors alike.

I hope this project gets the funding it needs to move forward. I don't see any negatives. A public institution like Brockport needs public funding, so I have no problem with aid going to them. Additionally, the Rochester community will benefit from this project. It seems like a no-brainer, so hopefully they'll be able to implement this plan.
